Heavy fighting in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Monday, 30 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Heavy fighting is reported between the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) and the Liberation Tigers in Vadamaradchi east in the Jaffna peninsula from this morning, said sources in Jaffna. Fighting erupted when the SLA tried to advance in to this region on the south eastern coast of the Jaffna peninsula.

A Sri Lankan Airforce helicopter was damaged by LTTE fire, said unconfirmed reports.

Fighting continues. Further details are awaited.

Vadamaradchi east is not under the control of the army. SLA made two attempts this year to move into the region. However, heavy LTTE resistance thwarted the army advance.
