Batticaloa council welcomes LTTE Statement

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 02 December 1998, 00:00 GMT]
Batticaloa Municipal Council unanimously adopted a resolution yesterday welcoming the peace offer made by the leader of the Liberation Tigers, Mr. Prabakaran, said Mr. Cheliyan Perinpanayakam, Mayor of Batticaloa.

He said that the resolution also urged Tamil parties to withdraw their support for the Government, if it fails to take a firm decision regarding the peace offer.

The council adopted another resolution condemning the Sri Lankan, President Chandrika Kumaratunge's, statement to South African TV where she had said that the Tamils are not the original people of the island.

Meanwhile the Federation of Muslim Mosques in Kathankuddy issued a statement yesterday urging the Sri Lankan Muslim Congress (SLMC) to give its co-operation to find a solution to the conflict in the island.

Despite President Chandrika Kumaratunge's comment that the North Western Provincial Council elections are to be held soon, there is no firm decision as yet by the Sri Lanka Government on whether to go ahead with elections to the Provincial Council.

Minister of Agriculture, D.M.Jeyaratne, is on record as saying that despite nominations being called for the elections, the government had only decided that S.B.Navinna would be the People's Alliance's chief ministerial candidate, and not on whether it will go ahead with the elections.
