Ten civilians wounded in shelling

[TamilNet, Saturday, 26 December 1998, 08:35 GMT]
Ten members of a family, including five children, were wounded in the village of Koduvamadu early this morning around 4 a.m. when Sri Lankan security forces fired artillery towards the western hinterland of the Batticaloa district.

The wounded were brought in a bullock cart to the Chenkalady town, 18 kilometers north of Batticaloa, this morning and thence rushed to the Batticaloa hospital.

The TamilNet's Batticaloa corespondent spoke to those who had not lost their consciousness.

According to them, six artillery rounds had hit and exploded in the area in which they were living.

They had run into a house for safety when the shelling started, thinking that the SLA was advancing towards Koduvamadu.

But this house had taken a direct hit from the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) artillery.

The house was destroyed and the five adults and five children who had huddled together under its roof were all wounded, some seriously.

The artillery opened up on the hinterland from the SLA brigade camp in Batticaloa town and from the Sri Lanka Airforce (SLAF) base on its south-western outskirt.

The wounded are:
