Sinhala Navy seeks funds to lure uprooted Champoor Tamils

[TamilNet, Thursday, 11 June 2015, 23:46 GMT]
The occupying SL Navy is trying to lure a section of the uprooted landowners in Champoor in Moothoor East to sell their residential and fertile lands to SL military. Informed sources told TamilNet Thursday that the SL Navy has demanded the new regime in Colombo to allocate large sums of money for the so-called relocation of its military cantonment in Champoor. The SL Navy is not prepared to shift the military cantonment to a remote location away from the people. The SL Navy was seeking ‘alternative’ lands consisting fertile agricultural and residential lands of the uprooted people, the sources further said. The SL Navy has worked out a new plan to modernize its military cantonment, the sources further said.

The new plan has been worked out with the participation high-ranking Sinhala military and civil officials in Trincomalee. The SL Governor in East, who is a former SL Defence Secretary, the Government Agent of Trincomalee, who is a Sinhalese, Survey Department officials, and Land Ministry officials are involved in the move.

The Colombo regime wants to create an impression of releasing military occupied land to enable the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) hierarchy to woo Tamil voters in favour of the new regime. At the same time, new lands are being identified strengthening the SL Navy with a sophisticated military cantonment.

In the meantime, uprooted Champoor Tamils languishing at the so-called welfare camp at Kaddaipa'richchan have urged Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentary Group Leader R. Sampanthan and the nominated parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran not to play politics with the uprooted Champoor Tamils.

“The TNA politicians told us that the interim ban issued by the courts in Colombo has been revoked. But, they didn't tell us the whole verdict, which had stated that the status quo should be maintained until the next verdict on 16 June. Now, the SL police is chasing us out blaming that we have violated the court order,” said Chelvakumar Hemalatha, who represents the uprooted Champoor Tamil women at Kaddai-pa'richchaan welfare centre.
