Government MP resigns in protest

A Sri Lankan government politician Friday resigned from his seat in Parliament in protest against the new constitution bill. Sources close to him said that his resignation will come into effect from midnight Friday. Jayasena Rajakaruna, the People's Alliance MP who represented the Bingiriya electorate in the Kurunagala is currently in Colombo.

The People's Alliance will have to nominate a person to the vacancy arising from Rajakaruna's resignation. Sources said that it would be difficult for the government to have a new MP sworn in place of Rajakaruna by next Wednesday when the vote on the bill is to taken.
