Welcoming OISL implies dropping national question and genocide claims

[TamilNet, Saturday, 19 September 2015, 01:09 GMT]
A hybrid mechanism in any form would seal the space and freedom of Eezham Tamils forever to talk about their national aspirations or independence, because in concept it is ‘hybrid’. This should be very well known to the Tamil civil societies functioning in the island, long gagged by the 6th Amendment of genocidal Sri Lanka’s constitution. The OISL has also not provided space for any mandated investigation from the angle of genocide, as demanded by the highest democratic institutions existing among Tamils in the island and in India. Yet, if the welcome comes from a group of civil societies, missing to tell what is fundamentally lost, it then shows only the long preparation of the USA, commented Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island, responding to a Joint Statement on the OISL Report, coming from 21 civil society organisations.

All the virtues of the OISL report can’t compensate the snatch away of the fundamental right of a genocide-affected nation to address its national cause internationally.

Citing the militant struggle as ‘international terrorism’, Eezham Tamils were asked to wage their struggle through democratic means. The democratically elected bodies have unanimously resolved for international investigation on genocide. The OHCHR recognising semblance of political change in Colombo fails to recognize the democratic political demand of Tamils.

The civil societies were once again outfits encouraged by the USA for transition from militancy to civil struggle, while retaining the genocidal military.

But Tamil civil societies can’t behave like politicians or next line of politicians prepared to move forth agendas. They have a duty to tell the truth to confused masses as they were earlier elucidating on the 13th Amendment, the activists said.

“Given that the report has suggested that the details be worked out in detail through a participatory, consultative process we would await the Government of Sri Lanka to make public its detailed proposals and refrain at this point in time from commenting on the adequacy of a hybrid mechanism for accountability in abstract,” said the statement of the civil groups.

The orchestration of the civil groups makes a grave mistake in not warning the Eelam Tamils adequately on the permanent loss of the fundamentals.

There is nothing wrong in welcoming the ‘trees’ or confessing on what one could achieve at a given time. But, failure to point out the loss of ‘forest’ is a crime. Right from 1931, or even before that, the Tamil ‘articulators’ groomed by the West were doing the same thing, Tamil activists for alternative politics commented.

“If Sri Lanka fails to establish a genuine hybrid mechanism within a specific time framework, the UNHRC, other relevant UN organs and member states should initiate necessary steps for a UN Security Council referral to the ICC,” concludes the statement of the civil groups.

Whether the orchestrated civil groups have also succumbed to the game of giving ‘time and space’ for ‘Sri Lanka’ to complete the genocide, the Tamil activists asked.

The civil society orchestration willing to consider the Hybrid mechanism has nothing to say on the partners of the Hybrid mechanism, which, to all available indications is going to be State in the island and the UN – both accused as failures in the case of the island.

Is there any reference to the participation of the affected party in the mechanism for the civil societies to welcome it en bloc, asked the Tamil activists for alternative politics.

Whether there was a long preparation of ‘layers’ by the USA in preparing Eezham Tamils to ‘reconcile’ to ‘hybrid unity’ of the island, is the ultimate question, the activists asked.
